MEDIA PRODUCTION COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

EXPLORATORY AND INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA PRODUCTION (3 credits)
All Grade students go through the Exploratory Program. Please see page 7 for more detail. Students deciding to enter the field of Media Production are introduced to basic concepts of Media Production including Pre-production (script writing and preparation of equipment), Production (Proper use of video and audio equipment), and Post-Production (Editing and Adding Titling and Transitions). Students will develop field production team projects utilizing basic video equipment and learn to use Windows Movie Maker to edit their project. Students will also be introduced to Media Communication theory and history. Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary and science are integrated throughout the curriculum.

MEDIA PRODUCTION II (3 credits)
In Grade 10, students build a strong foundation in the aspects of Media Production. Students will learn the basics of Field and Studio Production. In Field Production, students will expand their knowledge of Pre-Production (script writing, preparation of equipment, and narrative production), Production (Usage of Video Camera, lighting, and audio equipment) and Post-Production (Editing and adding of transitions and special effects using Adobe Premiere).

In Studio Production, students will learn the various roles of a studio production team. They will also learn the basics of studio video camera set ups and usage, audio equipment, lighting, audio mixing, and video switching. Students will work as teams to produce recorded and live production work. Students continue to receive instruction in safety requirements and demonstrate sound safety practices. Technology-related math, reading, writing, vocabulary and science are integrated throughout the curriculum.

MEDIA PRODUCTION III (3 credits)
In Grade 11, students will develop more advanced skill sets in Field and Studio Production Work. Students learn advanced editing techniques using Adobe Premiere. Students will also gain a basic understanding of the use of Adobe After Effects to develop relevant special effects for a wide range of production projects. Students will work on a variety of field production projects learning to use more advanced video camera technology. Students will also continue the development of their knowledge of studio operations. The design and creation of DVDs and developing more advanced soundtracks using Adobe Creative Suite will be emphasized. Technology-related math, reading, writing, vocabulary and science are integrated throughout the curriculum.

MEDIA PRODUCTION IV  (3 credits)
In Grade 12, students continue to advance their skill sets in Media Production concentrating on a capstone project that reflects the highest level of their abilities. From pitching their project ideas through writing, production, and post-production, students are expected to create a major work that illustrates their creativity, quality, and professionalism. Students will also continue to receive instruction in safety requirements and demonstrate sound safety practices. Students will demonstrate the ability to complete a job application and interview and to perform entry-level job readiness and trade skills. Students reaching an acceptable level of proficiency may be eligible for Work Based Learning (WBL). Each student will take the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) exam, a performance-based test.  Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary and science are integrated throughout the curriculum.

Students successfully completing this course of study will be able to pursue a two year Media Production degree at state colleges and universities or go on to a four year Media Production degree.
