As the 2009 season began, the Gladiators returned
12 players from the 2008 squad that posted at 6-9-1 record. With
the novelty of simply earning a trip to the state tournament no
longer good enough, the Team sets it season’s goals on having
a winning season, earning a trip to the Conference Tournament,
and making the 2nd round of the State Tournament. The Gladiator’s
accomplished all of their goals this season, posting a fantastic
record of 12 wins, 3 losses, and a tie. This was Goodwin’s
first winning season since the program was reinstituted in 2005.
As a result of their strong play, the Gladiators earned a trip
to the Conference Tournament, as well as securing a first round
bye, and a home game, in the State Tournament. In the Second Round
of the Class S State Tournament, Goodwin battled Sacred Heart of
Waterbury gamely, before succumbing to the Hearts by a score of
3 to 1. Although it was disappointing to end to a fabulous season,
Goodwin stood tall because of the tremendous accomplishments of
the 2009 season, and armed with the knowledge that the 2010 season
will be even better, because of the invaluable experience gained
from such a marvelous 2009 campaign. Goodwin will also return its
core group of players for the upcoming season, as well as the promise
of several freshmen and sophomores developing into solid, contributing
players.
Individually, the Gladiators
boasted 2 of the top players in the Constitution State Conference. Raul Canales
and Arek Wrobel were rightfully recognized as outstanding players by their
selection as 1st Team All-League players. For Arek, this is his second 1st
team selection, following up the 2008 season with 15 goals and 10 assists,
for a 2 year total of 31 goals, and 12 assists. As for Raul, he had a breakout
season leading the Conference in goals scored with 27, and overall points with
66. Raul’s 2 year totals, are simply outstanding with 41 goals and 18
assists. Oscar Jara was also named to the 1st Team All League, recognized for
his outstanding defense, and technical ability while contributing 4 goals and
7 assists. Finally, the 2009 saw the emergence of Giovanni Rios, who earned
2nd Team All League honors for his fine play and his outstanding direct kick
ability. All and all, the 2009 season saw the Gladiators reach new heights,
with the promise of even greater expectations for the future!
Fantastic Job Gladiators!
