The Henry Abbott Technical High School Precision Machining shop has played a pivotal role in the ambitious upgrade of the McCarthy Observatory's telescope.
Initially built in 2000 to encourage science education and curiosity among students, founding observatory member Bob Lambert realized that an upgraded custom plate was needed in order to mount a brand new telescope for the McCarthy Observatory, requiring precise engineering, intricate machining and attention to detail to match the specifications of the new hardware. “No machine shop was willing to take on the project due to its complexity and size,” said Bob. “That’s when we took a long shot and turned to Abbott Tech.”
Abbott Tech Precision Machining instructors Jim Mills and Steve Bova accepted the challenging project in order to provide valuable learning experiences for the students, as well as showcasing collaboration between educational institutions and community organization.

Over 850 CTECS students and teachers from the state’s 17 technical high schools got a chance to compete in the annual Connecticut SkillsUSA State Conference on March 22nd, 2024. Held throughout 13 different locations, the main site being H.C. Wilcox Technical High School in Meriden, over 53 different on-the-job challenges in various categories were completed.
This year, 75 CTECS students qualified and will move on to the SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference, set to take place in Atlanta, Georgia in June, where they’ll represent Connecticut in another showcase of career and technical skills alongside other technical high schools students from around the country.
Congratulations to all the students involved in making this year’s 2024 SkillsUSA State Conference a success! 👏

Last week, H.C. Wilcox Technical High School's Steve Wodarski was honored by the Connecticut Association of Athletic Directors with a Distinguished Service Award! Mr. Wodarski is the only technical high school Athletic Director to receive this award since its inception in 1981.

Recently, Emmett O'Brien Technical High School's Precision Machining Technology (PMT) students received a generous $18,000 tool donation from Forum Contract Manufacturing in Waterbury, Connecticut.
Forum Contract Manufacturing President Mark Polinsky was on hand to present the students with the tools in the surprise ceremony. "We are not only investing in you as individuals, but investing in the future of manufacturing in CT. Every manufacturing company in CT needs skilled technical employees who love working with their hands and have the expertise and knowledge you will gain during your years here at Emmett O’Brien," said Polinsky.

Eric Preneta, 2011 Platt Technical High School graduate, sat down with CTECS to talk about his current position as a Launch Pad Specialist for SpaceX and how his technical high school education prepared him for the role.
“No matter what I’ve been exposed to and learned along the way, everything ultimately goes back to those experiences… and fundamentals this program taught me,” Eric told CTECS.
He also delves into his role at SpaceX explaining, “I’ve worked on human flight missions both on the construction side and launch side, one of the highlights of my career was being able to have my hands on the Inspiration Mission that launched the first commercial crew of astronauts to space.”

An in-person hiring event will be held at Howell Cheney Technical High School, located at 791 West Middle Turnpike, Manchester, CT, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2024.
Qualified applicants may receive job offers at the event. CTECS substitute teachers are paid $155 daily. A bachelor’s degree is required.

Earlier this week, Norwich Technical High School Business Management and Administration (BMA) students competed amongst 1,150 other DECA Inc. students from other chapters across the state at the 72nd State Career Development Conference (SCDC).
During the Conference, students competed in Professional Selling, Financial Consulting, Apparel and Accessories Marketing, Retail Merchandising Series, and Team Decision Making/ Marketing Management.
At the end of the day, the Norwich Tech chapter was awarded the coveted DECA glass trophy. Additionally, BMA seniors Joey Lynn Mills and Lismary Aguilar took home third place in Team Decision Making, Marketing Management, making them eligible to compete at the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) held in Anaheim, CA April 27-30th! 👏
Last week, General Dynamics Electric Boat arrived at Howell Cheney Technical High School to interview students from multiple trade programs including Diesel and Heavy Duty Equipment Repair, Automotive Technology, Carpentry, Mechanical Design and Engineering Technology, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning and Welding and Metal Fabrication. The Welding students were also given a brief weld test to evaluate their skills. At the end of the event, sixteen students were interviewed and provided with a job offer from Electric Boat!

The Platt Technical High School Student Workforce has started working in collaboration with our aviation school, Stratford School for Aviation Maintenance Technicians, located at Sikorsky Memorial Airport.
In the first phase of their project, these Platt Tech Electrical seniors have been working to change out all current lighting to LEDs in three classrooms as well as within the paint shop. When the project is completed, the electrical consumption within the school will be reduced by at least 50%!

The Ella T. Grasso Technical High School Digital Media juniors took a visit recently to WTNH News 8 for some up close industry exposure.
Led by WTNH Chief Photographer Ryan Bernat, the students received a studio tour and were able to view the 12:00 newscast anchored by Ann Nyberg, an expert in the industry with over 40 years of experience and several prestigious awards for her broadcast journalism skills.

Governor Ned Lamont, state and local officials gathered at Bullard-Havens Technical High School Tuesday morning to celebrate the construction progress of their new building with a beam signing ceremony.
Sophomore Maritza Farias Silva will be among the first class to graduate from the new building. “This is not just a change in bricks and mortar, but a change of possibilities and opportunities as we see our school transform before our eyes,” Farias Silva said. “Bullard-Havens has always been a place where you can pursue your passions and careers. This new building will only enhance that legacy.”

Fourteen Norwich Technical High School students were sworn in as members of the National Technical Honor Society last Thursday at the school`s first ever induction ceremony.
The ceremony included the swearing in of the student officers of the Norwich Tech chapter, a ceremonial candle lighting, students walking across the stage to receive their #NTHS certificate, and swearing an oath to the NTHS.

Students at Henry Abbott Technical High School are getting a headstart in a career in #construction by working alongside professionals at the Carpenters Union Hall in Wallingford. Some of the students have already been accepted into the union!
“For the first time we have a group of technical students from Abbott Tech being part of our partnership program and really get more exposure to what the commercial construction industry is doing,” said Miguel Fuentes from North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters.

Windham Technical High School held a grand opening last week for its state-of-the-art #VirtualReality Lab, a new facility designed to revolutionize education, emulate the modern workforce, and empower students in both academic and trade classes.
The #VR lab, the first of its kind in Connecticut’s technical high schools, will provide students with immersive experiences, resources, and materials that were previously inaccessible, preparing them for future careers in various industries.
“The collaborative effort that went into the development of this lab is truly remarkable. Students from trades such as #electrical, #carpentry, #IT, and #manufacturing played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life,” said Principal Eric Hilversum. “Notably, this lab will bring experiential education to a new level, eliminating physical boundaries and enhancing the way students access curriculum.”

This is a first-of-its kind partnership with the DOT and will provide invaluable career training opportunities for these students.
Recently, Prospect Police Department Officer Tory Madsen contacted H.C. Wilcox Technical High School seeking a build for a platform that their K-9 partner, Mayhem, can lay on during long drives. Typically, this kind of built-in unit made specifically for a Ford Expedition could cost up to $2,000.
With materials purchased by the Town of Prospect, the #Automotive #CollisionRepair and Refinishing students at Wilcox measured and welded the frame, #Plumbing and Heating donated tubing, and students from #Carpentry cut the wooden base that will be covered with a rubber mat for cushioning. Automotive Collision Repair then finished the project by sizing, welding and painting the assemblies. The final product is a folding unit that can be easily stored in the SUV.

Davin Murphy, 12th grade plumbing student recently signed with Douglas Plumbing, Heating, AC LLC of Farmington, CT.
Guiliana Fazzina, 11th grade electrical student and Andrew Koscho, 12th grade electrical student, both recently signed with Power Solutions, LLC of Bristol, CT. Power Solutions is owned by Goodwin alumni Matt Skinner, a 2017 graduate.
Shoutout to these three H.C. Wilcox Technical High School #electrical students who had their pre-apprenticeship signings last week 👏
Michael Zacchia signed with J&N Electrical, and Nicholas Barrett and Joey Schwall both signed with McCann Systems!
Also present at the signing was Connecticut Department of Labor representative Keri Valente and Wilcox`s Dean of Students Cristina Stisser.

Last week, Platt Technical High School hosted their eighth annual Thanksgiving dinner for over 100 local community members from the Beth El Center, Bridges Healthcare, Inc., Milford Senior Center and Milford Transit District.
The 40 #Culinary students at Platt practiced their catering skills on a large scale by cooking up 20 turkeys, 20 pounds of green beans, hundreds of mashed potatoes, as well as apple and pumpkin pies.

Earlier this week, @eversourceenergy hosted dozens of students from @aiprincetech for an opportunity to explore their #career options in the #electricity industry including line work, meter mechanics and underground works.
Students also got an up close look at line workers using bucket trucks, climbing utility poles, and even practiced using equipment and wearing protective gear.

Today, CTECS and the CT Department of Labor (@ctdol), and construction industry representatives celebrated the initial apprenticeship and employment signing with Carpenters Local 326 and @PursuitConstruction (Essex, CT).
Harvard H. Ellis Technical High School #carpentry student Christopher Harvey is the first high school student in Connecticut to enter construction #apprenticeship and employment as a result of a Work-Based Learning program (#WBL).

Yesterday, 12th grade E.C. Goodwin Technical High School #Plumbing student Mason Chartier (seated left) signed on for his #preapprenticeship in #FireProtection (F-2) with AFS Fire Protection of Southington, CT.
Also present at the signing was his mother, Nicolette Chartier; Joe DuPuis, VP of AFS Fire Protection and the Paul Femia, representative from the CT Department of Labor.
AFS Fire Protection as been a supporter of CTECS for several years with now three Goodwin Tech plumbing students as pre-apprentices!
Congratulations to our 12th grade plumbing students and thank you to AFS Fire Protection for supporting our students! 👏
Over the summer, #UnitedIlluminating hosted their first-ever summer internship for nine seniors at Eli Whitney and Bullard-Havens Technical High School to teach them what it takes to repair power lines.
Throughout the ten-week program, the students were paid $30 an hour working alongside union pros in bucket trucks to learn the ropes of this technical job.
All nine students have received job offers from UI when they graduate.

CTECS strives to offer programs designed to meet the evolving needs Connecticut employers. This school year, the school system opened several new programs in in-demand career fields.
One such program is Landscape Design, Installation and Equipment at E.C. Goodwin Technical High School in New Britain.

Today, Owen Wilson, an #HVAC student at Cheney Tech, was presented a scholarship award in honor of Russell J. Hany.
Russell was an HVAC graduate of Cheney Tech who passed away 25 years ago today. In his memory, his family established a scholarship for a rising HVAC professional. Owen received this scholarship because of his excellent skills and commitment to the trade.
