SEASON RECAP

The 2009 Softball team had a rebuilding year. After losing five seniors from a team that went 12 -5, this year’s team only had six upper classmen and fifteen sophomores and freshmen. This years team included seniors Rebeca VanGuilder, Veronica Lopez, and Emily Hernandez.

Rebeca VanGuilder is a three time first team All- CSC selection. Rebeca has played three positions this year. Her versatility and experience will be greatly missed. Veronica Lopez was this year’s #1 pitcher. This is Veronica’s first year as our full-time pitcher. She did a very good job and showed tremendous improvement throughout the season.

Emily Hernandez is a first year player. Where was Emily the other three seasons? We still do not have a solid answer to that question, but she came in and contributed right away. Emily has also started some games at 2nd base and her offense steadily improved during the season.

Our other outstanding players include Yomari  “Barry Bonds” Ortiz, Katherine “A-Rod” Santiago, and Emely “ Manny Ramirez” Vega. These young ladies have been consistent power hitters and defenders all season. Yomari Ortiz, a junior, is a two-time first All-CSC selection. Yomari is already receiving interests from colleges. If you haven’t seen her play yet, check her out next season. You will not be disappointed.

Katherine Santiago, a sophomore, is our most improved player. Her game has improved 100% offensively and defensively, due to her dedication of hard work in the off-season.

Last, but not least, is our freshman sensation, Emely. Emely, is an All-CSC EAST Honorable Mention Selection. Emely has so much potential and will be one of the greatest players by the time she graduates. Emely has shown the abilities of a player who can compete on the college level. Emely currently plays with adults in the off-season, which has greatly helped during the season.

All of our other members of our team came in and showed a great deal of improvement throughout the season. Jenny Nawokowski, a sophomore, started at 3rd base as a first year player. We hope throughout all the hard work and dedication, she can build towards a season of improvement next year.
