This year’s incoming freshmen were greeted with enthusiasm and optimism from 33 senior mentors. Each spring members of the junior class apply to be chosen as a senior mentor for the next year’s incoming freshmen class. The goal of the senior mentor program is to provide all incoming freshmen students with a senior mentor(s) to connect with and foster a relationship with throughout the year. In addition Senior Mentors are provided with the opportunity to assume leadership roles and demonstrate responsibility in the school setting. “This is the best group of senior mentors I have seen in a long time” said Dr. Ashton. “They all met with such enthusiasm and they kept it up at every event” said Mrs. Scheff, Senior Mentor Advisor.
Senior mentors met with their assigned homerooms on the first day of school and guided their groups through the day. They also participated in ice breaker activities to make the first day a bit more comfortable for the new students. The senior mentors continue to connect with their assigned groups throughout the year. Every day in the academic cycle they connect in their homerooms as senior mentors are assigned to the same homeroom throughout the year. In addition they meet with the freshmen in a variety of fun activities throughout the year, such as an ice cream social on the 2nd day of school, or making valentines in the winter. Most of the senior mentor’s chose to apply to be one because they were so positively influenced by their mentors when they were freshmen. It is a tradition whose benefits carry throughout the years.
