As part of the ongoing efforts to build
and strengthen relationships with their 9th grade homerooms, the Senior
Peer Mentors took ten minutes of homeroom time to facilitate an activity.
Using the game "Have you
ever?" the Mentors and 9th grade students were able to learn new things
about each other, find similarities and embrace differences. The general
idea is to share an experience that you have had and see if anyone else
has had the same experience.
For example, one student was shocked to find
she was not the only one who has been sky diving in her class. The mission
is to get students to share feelings as well. Mentors initiated this by
sharing a personal experience they have had where they have either been
the target of harassment, the perpetrator, the ally or the bystander. Homeroom
teachers reported that most students had fun and shared easily. The Mentors
did a great job in creating a non-threatening environment where students
could share without fear.
This is just one way in which the Senior Mentors are creating a welcoming
environment at Windham Tech. |
