In
its third year of existence The East of the River CTHSS Food
Drive Challenge pitted four technical high schools against
each other as they vie to bring in the most food to donate
to area shelters, pantries and soup kitchens. Norwich Tech,
Grasso Tech and Windham Tech all competed to defeat two time
winner, Ellis Tech. For two weeks, from January 28th to February
11th, students brought in food on a daily basis. All four schools
agreed on the same method of counting the food, by the pound.
Anything under a pound was considered one pound and everything
over would be rounded up to the next pound. This year, the
combined effort of all four schools brought in 9,306 pounds
of food.
While
this is impressive it is considerably less then last year’s total of over 14,000 pounds. No doubt, today’s
tough economic times have made it so more families are in need,
and less can give. Despite this Windham Tech came very close
to matching their total for last year, while the other schools
were not able to get near last year’s numbers. Even with
their famous last day drop off, Ellis tech was not able to
pull out the victory and Windham tech walked away as the new
Food Drive Champions and holders of the Food Drive plaque till
next year.
Each
school conducts their own internal competition to get the excitement
going. When students dropped off their food they would also
report what shop they were in so their shop would get credited.
This year, it looked like Architectural technology or the LPN
program might come away with a victory. But true to last year’s
antics and tradition, Manufacturing Technology delivered over
1,200 pounds of food on the last day to blow the competition
away. Their combined total was 1,345 pounds of food, more then
the combined total of what the rest of the school brought.
This entitles them to 6 points towards field day at the end
of the year, a spring cookout, and the right to be the home
of the beloved Wile E. Coyote food drive mascot.
Good
Job Manufacturing Technology!
