Program Description

Students deciding to enter the field of Information Technology are introduced to basic concepts of computer hardware and software. Instruction is provided in office productivity software (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) and students demonstrate beginner skills in these programs. Students learn the basics of safety, as well as equipment identification and use. The introduction to computer hardware includes knowledge of computer components and computer accessories. Technology-related mathematics, reading, writing, vocabulary and science are integrated throughout the curriculum.

Basic computer programming, school-to-work and job readiness skills are also introduced. Students are prepared to take Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification Tests. In addition, students prepare for certification exams in a range of topics, leading to Microsoft Technology Associate Certification.  Students apply technology concepts to solving real-world problems.  Customer service skills are introduced as students perform technology support services for the CTECS school community.

Students demonstrate advanced skills in web design and desktop publishing. Programming skills are refined and developed in various languages, such as HTML, Java, Java Script and Python. Networking skills are introduced and students are required to set up small networks and test them. Troubleshooting skills are taught and refined. School-to-work and job readiness skills are introduced as students prepare for employment opportunities. Students reaching an acceptable level of proficiency may be eligible for Work-Based Learning (WBL).  Following general study in IT, students select a pathway from among 6 options and develop an individual learning plan in cooperation with their teacher.  As students work independently toward employment or higher education in their area of focus, they prepare for and take certification exams related to their pathway.  IT pathways include:

  • Management Information Systems
  • Interactive Web Content and Digital Media
  • Computer Science and Programming
  • Computer Networking and CyberSecurity
  • Hardware Troubleshooting
  • Web Development

Each student will create a capstone project demonstrating mastery of their chosen pathway and prepare and deliver a presentation of their year-long work.  Students successfully completing this course of study will be able to pursue a two-year computer technology degree at state colleges and universities or go on to a four-year computer engineering degree. Students can obtain immediate employment in the information systems technology area.
